General FAQs
What is a Member?
It sounds complicated, but a member just means you have an account at our credit union. We don't like the word 'customer' around here, because our account holders are so much more! When you're a member at Santa Fe FCU, you are an owner of the credit union. Your initial deposit of $5 represents your share of the credit union and enables you to benefit from all of our services and even allows you to vote for our Board of Directors.
Most importantly, our members' best interest is at the core of everything we do at the credit union, and we'd love to show you what the credit union difference is all about!
What is a credit union?
Credit Unions were formed with the purpose of People Helping People. It is at the core of everything that we do and inspires the credit union difference. You will never be just another number at a credit union. A Credit Union is cooperative, nonprofit corporation, incorporated to encourage thrift among its members and create a source of credit at a fair and reasonable cost. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions, meaning there's not a Board of Directors somewhere making a large profit at your expense. We do have a Board of Directors, they are made up of credit union members just like yourself who volunteer their time to make the credit union the best it can be for each and every member.
How is a credit union different from a bank?
Credit Unions have a board of directors that make decisions for the best interest of the members, whereas a bank has stockholders who make business decisions for the company. The board of directors are not compensated in most cases.
Are my accounts insured?
Accounts at Santa Fe Federal Credit Union are fully insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). All deposit accounts are insured up to $250,000.
